Sebastian Hoyland – a team player

“I continuously want to learn and develop further to a point where I can continue to add value to the teams I work with and clients I work for.”

SEB001 web

Hoyland is a mechanical engineer at Aurecon’s Johannesburg office where he designs HVAC systems for new and existing buildings. He is responsible for heat load calculations, energy modelling, building information modelling (BIM), attending client meetings, and managing contractors on site.

He is also a Green-Star-accredited professional and has been lucky enough to work on various Green-Star-rated projects.

Getting started

Hoyland completed a Mechatronics BEng degree from the University of Johannesburg.

After his studies, Hoyland started working at Victaulic, an American-based manufacturing company that sells pipe fittings and accessories into multiple global industries. He worked there as a sales engineer and was involved in the maritime and HVAC industries. This is where he was introduced to the consulting world of HVAC design.

After a year at Victaulic, he decided that he wanted to expand on his technical capabilities and contacted Aurecon regarding a job opportunity. He was interviewed by his current manager and offered the job as a HVAC design engineer at the Johannesburg office.

For the love of the job

So, what attracted him to this industry in particular? “Being part of the team that builds flagship projects is what gives me a kick out of my job,” he says. At Victaulic, he was fortunate enough to experience the feeling of being on large construction sites in the US and that made him appreciate the intensity and the scale of the industry, he says.

Hoyland enjoys his job and working in this industry. “It is very dynamic, with many ways to increase efficiency in the way designs are done,” he explains. “I never feel that coming to work is a burden, which I am grateful for. I enjoy being part of the design teams on large-scale projects, who influence the concept design and contribute towards producing the final product.”

Hoyland has worked on many interesting projects, including:

  • Time Square Casino, Hotel and Arena
  • Dubai Podium (this is the podium at the base of the Calatrava Tower)
  • Mall of the South (a 65 000m2 shopping mall in the south of Johannesburg).

Currently, although it is not the biggest project with the highest project value, he is also working on a mixed-mode ventilation office building that will operate as a naturally ventilated building while the outdoor conditions are favourable. “It is unconventional to what we typically construct locally, which is the challenge I appreciate.”

Future plans

Hoyland is working on his submission to register as professional engineer and aims to be registered in 2019. At the same time, he hopes to continue working on prestigious projects that will be around for many years to come.

He has a positive outlook on life and often sees opportunity in the most negative situations.
